By default, an employee clocking in is matched to the shift on their schedule and cannot change it. You can let them pick another shift of the day instead, or enter their own location, position and resource (if applicable).
A) Turn the setting on for the whole organization
Only an administrator can turn this setting on. It is off by default.
Go to the “Settings” tab
Click on “Attendance”, then on “Clocking”
Scroll down to the “Restrictions” section and enable “Allow employees to override or select another shift when clocking in”
Click “Save”
IMPORTANT
This setting and “Allow clock-in only when a shift is scheduled” cannot both be enabled. When one is turned on, the other becomes read-only.
B) Turn the setting on for specific employees only
You can leave the setting off for the organization and enable it case by case, from the employee's individual settings. See how to set individual Time and Attendance settings for a specific employee.
C) What your employees see
When clocking in, a message appears under the matched shift: “Wrong shift or info? Adjust my clock-in”. It is added to every way to clock that is active in the organization.
The “Adjust my clock-in” screen offers two choices:
Another shift — the list of the day's other published shifts. The employee picks one and clocks in on it.
Custom clock-in — the employee enters their own location, position and resource (if applicable). Their time entry is then linked to no shift at all.
D) Good to know
The shifts offered are the day's published shifts, except the one already matched and those that have already been clocked. The one closest to the clock-in time is preselected.
If the employee has no other shift that day, only the “Custom clock-in” is offered: the toggle does not appear and they land on that screen directly.
The “Custom clock-in” tab only appears if the employee belongs to more than one location or more than one position. When there is nothing to pick, the tab is not shown.
Adjusting happens on clock-in only. To change shift during the day, the employee has to clock out, then clock in again.
The choice shows in the clock log; no notification is sent to the manager.
Timesheet alerts work the same way: an entry linked to the chosen shift is compared against that shift, like any other entry. A custom clock-in is linked to no shift, so there is nothing to compare.
