The turnover rate is a key indicator in human resources, as it allows you to assess the proportion of employees who leave a company over a given period. This article aims to explain how employee turnover is calculated!

Calculation of turnover rate

The turnover rate measures the number of employees who have left a company over a given period.

To calculate it, divide the number of employees who left during that period by the total number of employees who worked for the company during the same period, i.e., those who stayed until the end and those who left.

The reference period is usually one year. The result is then multiplied by 100 to express it as a percentage:

Employee turnover=

(# of employees who left /((# of employees at the beginning +# of employees at the end) 2))x100

Here is an example:

A company has 40 employees at the end of the year. During that same year, 10 employees left the company.

The total number of employees who worked during the year is therefore 50 (40 remaining employees + 10 employees who left).

The turnover rate is calculated as follows:

10 ÷ 50 = 0.2

Multiplying by 100 gives a turnover rate of 20%.
